My Unique Study Experience in Estonia !!!

 Something about Estonia?

Estonia is found in northeastern Europe by the Baltic Sea and offers beautiful woodland and lake landscapes together with a rapidly evolving innovative economy and industry. In other words, a great setting for modern post graduate education.

Every year, Estonia offers several number of scholarships for young civil servants and diplomats to study at the Estonian School of Diplomacy (ESD)

This year I am one of four students from Republic of Moldova, who won the scholarship for 2012-2013 study course at ESD. My studies started in september  this year and I am already enjoying my studies.

Last year in Moldova I was working at the Ministry of Youth and Sports of the Republic of Moldova, as the Head Counsellor of International Relations Service, where I got great experience in the field of cooperation and negociation with my colleagues from other countries. I was delegated several times as the head of national delegation in diverse international youth events, congresses, conferences, seminars and initiatives of European Union, especially in the subject of Eastern Partnership Youth Cooperation initiatives and new lunched projects. In one year i visited almost 12 countries, meet peoples from around 100 countries, and made new international friends.

What were my previous studies?

In Moldova I studied at Moldova State University, Faculty of International Relations, Political Science and Public Administration, I was specialized on Diplomatic and European Studies. My Master Thesis subject was : ,, State building and European Integration of the Republic of Moldova” As European Integration is very important  and it is the main priority of my country. My previous studies were at Free International University from Moldova, Faculty of History and International Relations.

Why I chouse Estonia?

Frankly speaking, I heard about Etonia from one estonian international youth exchange participant, we were involved in international youth in action project . We were members of the same task group and we had to hold a pressentation of each of our own country, so we decided to present Estonia and Moldova together, we made an amazing presentation on how an estonian man will be living in Moldova. It was amazing. During the presentation I found out some interesting facts on Estonia, as it is the smallest of the three Baltic countries situated in Northern Europe. Due to its location, the country has often been regarded as a bridge between the East and the West. Its population is modest - only 1.3 million people live there but, still the nation is very innovative and technologically advanced. I found out that free wireless Internet is a "human right" in Estonia, and even in some forests you will find WiFi.

I am proud that from Almost 70,000 students currently study at Estonian universities, I am one of them, and i belive it will be a great student experience for me and it will help me in my future development and maybe to become a future Ambassador of Moldova to Estonia.

Why Estonian School of Diplomacy?

This School is already famouse one, at least in Moldova there are a lot of people who heard something good about this School. Also from the begining I was searching for Alumni of this School, and I found some of them. They were so excited to hear again about this great school and they told me this was the best study experience they ever had in their lives. Also they told me that this school prepares the best future Ambasadors, and it is true because we already have at least one of Alumni from this school who is now the Ambassador of Moldova to Estonia, His Excellency Mr.Victor GUZUN.

I hope also that my studies at Estonian School of Diplomacy will be a great experience for me and it will be a bridge for my personal and profesional development. So I will return back home in Moldova with a lot of experience, good case practice and ideas to share and implement in my country.

Launching the campaign “A detail that saves lives”

Launching the campaign “A detail that saves lives”
By analyzing the number of accidents with the involvement pedestrians occurring in villages of Moldova during the darkness part of the year, we launched a civil action to collect reflectors for a pilot project to increase road safety in Moldova. We intend to collect the largest possible number of the reflectors for pedestrians. Reflectors will be sent to all pupils(students) from the villages: Magdacesti, Porumbeni, Ratus, Pascani Drasliceni and Loganesti, the district of Criuleni where the incidence and risk of road accidents are increased.
In the schools from these villages will take place public campaigns organized by the local public administration, teachers, bloggers, local NGOs, other partners of the project. During these campaigns will be described advantages of using reflectors, but also will be shared Estonian experience in this field, will be shown relevant printed materials and video.
We launched an request and received a quick response from several
organizations and institutions from Estonia who donated reflectors, among which Municipal Police in Tallinn, NGO Terveilm, DNB Bank, DHL Estonia,  Open Estonian Foundation, Lilli Jahilo, Fashion Designer, Eesti Inimõiguste Keskus, Department of Roads of Estonia. Honorary Consul of the Republic of Moldova in Tartu, Mr. Tiit Vapper, joined our campaign, contributing with 500 reflectors.
The subsequent geographical area of the project will be determined according to the number of reflectors collected.
In Estonia, this campaign has reduced the number of accidents with the involvement pedestrians during the dark part of the day, which resulted in deaths, from 47 cases in 1999 to 9 cases in 2011.
What is the reflector for pedestrians? A “detail” that saves lives. A small object that by the fact that reflects light, is designed to protect pedestrians moving at night. Normally, in the dark, a driver who is driving with the low beam of light will see the pedestrian from a distance of 25-30 m, which, during adverse weather conditions, becomes 15-20 m at a speed of 80 km / h, it would take a time of 1.3 seconds to see the pedestrian and react. It’s too short time to react. Person with a reflector in such cases it is seen from a distance of 150 m, which will allow the driver to reduce the speed and avoid misfortune. Some additional arguments:
-         Always you have it in handy, it’s easy to find place for it in the smallest of pockets.
-         It is relatively cheap.
-         Increases by 8 times the chances that the pedestrian will be seen at night.
-         Saves lives simply by attaching it to clothes or bag.
Final argument is found in the chart showing the situation on Estonian roads, during the implementation of this campaign:
Each of us can contribute for increasing the safety on the roads by civic attitude and participation.

The campaign was launched by Viorica and Victor Guzun
